What is functional mushrooms?

Functional mushrooms are fungi that provide health benefits beyond nutritional composition. These health benefits may range from strengthening immunity and boosting cognitive function to energy and relaxation.

These mushrooms have been used for hundreds of years from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda to Ancient Egyptian due to their medicinal properties. Many ancient medical practitioners believed they are herb of longevity and immortality and used to serve them to emperors, royal and the nobles.

Some of the terms you often hear when people talk about functional mushrooms:

  • Antioxidant

Antioxidant is natural molecules that help fight harmful free radicals in our body, which cause damage to cells, proteins and even DNA. Replenishing antioxidant help protect against this oxidative stress tha has been associated with many of the diseases of aging, like cancer, coronary heart disease and Alzheimer's. Research shows that many functional mushrooms contain high amount of antioxidant e.g. Chaga is found to be one of the richest antioxidant mushrooms in nature.

  • Adaptogen

Adaptogen are herbs or mushrooms that helps your body respond to stress, anxiety, fatigue and maintain balance, or homeostasis by resisting physical or mental stressors. Adaptogenic herbs or mushrooms interact with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and are central to the body’s homeostasis, stress responses and energy metabolism. It helps balance our system. However,it’s important to note that it is not a cure and may not work in extreme or immediate cases or anxiety or depression.

  • Beta-glucan

β-Glucan occurs naturally in the cell walls of functional mushrooms. It is a soluble dietary fiber obtained from oats, barley, bacteria, yeast, algae, and mushrooms. They are typically fermentable (i.e. prebiotic) in our digestive tract. They are believed to help prevent the body from absorbing cholesterol from food, stimulating the immune system, improving gut, heart and cardiometabolichealth. The US FDA allows products containing at least 750 mg of beta-glucans to have a health claim stating that they might reduce heart disease risk. The immune system activation by beta-glucans is complemented by the presence of triterpenoids.

  • Triterpenoids

Triterpenes are a chemical compounds composed of three terpene units (or sixisoprene units) and represent the largest group of phytochemicals. Recently, they have arose as a major group of secondary metabolites with important spectrum of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, hepato-/gastro-/cardio-protective, antiatherosclerotic, anticancer etc. Few mushrooms reishi and chaga contain significant amount of triterpenes. Triterpenoids are responsible for the bitter taste of and this bitterness can be used as a quick reference for evaluating the quality of the mushrooms.

  • Polysaccharide-krestin (PSK)

Also known as krestin, PSK is a unique protein-bound polysaccharide isolate derived from Turkey Tail mushrooms that has been used as a chemoimmunotherapy agent in the treatment of cancer in some Asian countries like Japan and China for decades. Clinical trials have demonstrated that PSK has great potential as an adjuvant cancer therapy agent, with positive results seen in the adjuvant treatment of gastric, esophageal, colorectal, breast and lung cancers. It is approved in Japan as an addition to conventional therapies for treating cancer.

  • Polysaccharide peptide (PSP)

PSP is a protein-bound polysaccharide extracted from Coriolus versicolor mushrooms (Turkey Tail). It is frequently suggested as an adjunct to the chemo- or radiotherapy in cancer patients. Both PSP and PSK boost immune cell production, ameliorate chemotherapy symptoms and enhance tumour infiltration. Their high tolerability, proven benefits to survival and quality of life, and compatibility with chemotherapy and radiation therapy makes them well suited for cancer management regimens.
